This new Rwandan, Red Bourbon, from the Fugi Washing Station sits tucked between the Nyungwe National Forest and the Burundian border in Rwanda's Southern Province - one of the country's most exciting growing pockets and a station that has quickly become a standout in the Baho Coffee network.
The lot comes from around 60 smallholder farmers delivering handpicked Red Bourbon cherry to Fugi, where it's hand-sorted, floated for density, and pulped before undergoing a 12-hour dry fermentation followed by an 8-hour clean water soak. What makes Fugi especially unique is its proprietary grading system - rather than the standard A/B/C separation, Baho breaks Grade A down into three sub-grades and Grade B into two, giving each bean a better chance to be grouped with its ideal match. After grading, parchment dries slowly on raised beds for up to 40 days, resulting in a cup with exceptional clarity and structure.
It's elegant and tea like right from the first sip - think bergamot and honeysuckle as you sort through the aromatics, followed by juicy white nectarine sweetness that gives way to a buttoned up pear nectar finish. It's one of the washed African coffee that continues to evolve in complexity as it cools. We only have a few bags, so grab some now.
