We're super excited to release this new coffee from our friends at Primavera Coffee! This incredible coffee comes from the special Arcoirís line. There's no way to explain in a word what the coffees in this line are like. Some show wild strawberry sweetness, some have explosive pineapple juiciness, some boast an intense grapelike funkiness. The only way to really capture what these coffees are like is to use a visual metaphor: they make up a rainbow, or in Spanish, Arcoíris.
The unique microclimate found at these high elevations is part of what makes Angelinas coffee remarkable. Her family has worked in agriculture for many generations, but they haven’t always produced coffee; as a child, she recalls that they grew corn, beans, and potatoes, and during harvesting seasons they worked at nearby coffee farms in Concepcion Huista. This was how the family learned to care for coffee, and they decided to pursue coffee production on their own farms too. As Angelina and her husband were given farms through family inheritance, they also worked to earn money to buy additional plots of land; this was enough to give them their start as high-quality coffee growers.
El Sendero cooperative provides coffee producers support and information around Concepcion Huista in the Huehuetenango region. The cooperative was formed in 2016 and it has 196 coffee producing members, of which 62 are women and 134 are men. El Sendero focuses on empowering its farmer members through agricultural trainings and other key resources.
“It was hard to begin sowing coffee on our farms at first. Where we were living, the climate was not ideal for coffee production, and we had to seek out plots of land with a war - mer microclimate in our area in order to sow coffee. In spite of all the challenges, we have been improving our quality and learning new agricultural practices, especially when it comes to post harvest processing, in order to offer the best quality product and receive the best possible prices.”
We hope you enjoy this coffee as much as we do!
